- The Influenza vaccine available in India is a trivalent vaccine that provides immunity against Influenza A, B and the dreaded H1N1 viruses.
- Influvac, Influgen, Vaxigrip and Agrippal are some local brand names.
- Every year a new batch comes between end September and early October.
- Immunity develops in 2 to 3 weeks after injection.
- Despite mild winters prevailing in Mumbai, vaccination is advisable as Influenza B is perennial in our country.
- Ideally the annual influenza vaccination is universally recommended.
- But due to cost concerns and other practical difficulties this does not occur.
- It is a must in all those older than 50 years and with co morbid illnesses.
- Of course doctors must take this vaccination annually to protect themselves from patients and vice versa!
- A rare though serious side effect of this vaccine is Guillain Barre syndrome.
- This vaccine can be administered along with Pneumococcal vaccine on the same day.
- Pregnancy is not a contraindication for this vaccine.
- The quadrivalent vaccine and the live attenuated vaccines including the nasal vaccines are not available in India.
